I’ve been trying out ConDoc5 today in SU2023 on Mac Monterey 12.6.3 (21G419). Everytime I click the export to Layout button it causes Sketchup to crash. Should ConDoc5 work in SU 2023? Any advice?
March 1, 2023 at 12:57 am #34032Mike BrightmanKeymasterDefinitely works in SU 2023. I’ve been running on the beta for about 8 months. This most likely has to do with the files size or poly count in the model, and asking LayOut to flatten it. Send it my way and I can take a look… [email protected]
March 1, 2023 at 2:27 am #34036Mike BrightmanKeymasterKevin! Really nice work at first glance… From all angles. Design, light modeling, organization. I dig! I’m recalling an issue from long ago with certain characters in the drawing names. On my windows machine I was able to send our drawings to layout without any problems, but without your drawing set I can’t send anything custom.
Can you remove the : from “CD_Floor Plan 01 – Openings:High” in the drawing set and then run that plan again? Cross your fingers and maybe this is it!? Please send the .condoc drawing set my way too and I will give it a twirl!
March 1, 2023 at 2:48 am #34038[email protected]ParticipantThanks Mike – I tried renaming those scenes and renaming the drawing set but it still crashed. When I was exporting before I was just trying to export the Foundation Plan, and those scenes didn’t have the : in the name. It’s strange that the same model was exporting drawings to Layout fine in SU 2022 but when I started trying it out in 2023 it crashed. I was just trying it in 23 because I like the custom rotation angle and sequence by page features. I’ll email you the drawing set now. Thanks!
March 27, 2023 at 10:02 am #34071[email protected]ParticipantI am getting a similat issue – Sketchup crashing when exporting to Layout, although I just started my subscription and running the ADU example model. I have also tried 5.0.2.5 to see if that helps but when I get to export to layout, Sketchup crashes. I have tried exporting just one or several but none have worked. I checked the standard way in Sketchup to send to Layout and this worked. I also tried another model and set this up using Condocs but still Sketchup crashes.
March 27, 2023 at 2:48 pm #34073Mike BrightmanKeymasterSorry to hear that David! Can you click on the extensions dropdown > developer > ruby console… Then run again and let me know if there are any errors showing up. Does the FLEX drawing set work?
March 28, 2023 at 8:34 am #34074[email protected]ParticipantHi Mike, tried with Ruby Console and showed several of theses errors (I put the “….” for user):
/user/…./library/application support/sketchup 2023/sketchup/plugins/condoc tools/angulardlg.rbe:54: warning: URI.unescape is obsolete
March 28, 2023 at 9:53 am #34075[email protected]ParticipantMike, following on from above, the warning error occurs when you press the majority of the Condoc tool buttons, however, these do what they are supposed to do (no crashing) and it is only when exporting to Layout that it crashes. I also tried using flex but it also crashes Sketchup.
As you would see I am on a Mac and running 13.2.1.
March 30, 2023 at 2:58 am #34076[email protected]ParticipantI am having the same issue as David. SketchUp crashes whenever I try to export to layout while in the tutorial (using the ADU model). I am also on a Mac (2020 iMac, 3.8 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i7, AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB, Memory: 128 GB 2667 MHz DDR4). I just signed up today and was hoping this would help me on a project I have to create a lot of views of, so if anyone has any suggestions I’d appreciate it! I would hate to have to cancel before my free trial is up.
March 30, 2023 at 4:04 am #34077Mike BrightmanKeymasterPlease send me your model and let me know which drawing set is crashing… I will take a look! [email protected]
April 3, 2023 at 3:52 am #34078Mike BrightmanKeymasterHere’s a new beta in direct response to this crash on macs.
Let me know if this solves the issue. Thanks for your patience on sorting this out!
Mike
April 14, 2023 at 6:03 pm #34090[email protected]ParticipantHi Mike – I updated to 5.0.2.6 and Sketchup 2023 is still crashing when exporting to Layout.

April 16, 2023 at 10:55 pm #34100[email protected]ParticipantHi Mike, unfortunately still the same here, even with the update and reinstall.
April 17, 2023 at 7:02 pm #34104Mike BrightmanKeymasterSorry guys! I know this is frustrating… We are still working on it!
April 25, 2023 at 12:45 pm #34127[email protected]ParticipantMike,
I am also just starting out with ConDoc and having the same issue with crashing when sending to Layout 2023. Unlike others I am running a Windows based machine.
May 1, 2023 at 4:58 pm #34129Mike BrightmanKeymasterSorry for the delay on this, we believe it is traced back to a bug in SketchUp 2023… But let’s not get pulled into the blame game! We think we have a solution… Should have a new version to try by midweek. Thanks for your patience!
May 3, 2023 at 3:29 pm #34135Mike BrightmanKeymasterIt’s been quite a week with technology for me, but I’m confident this is it! Can you guys install this beta, restart SketchUp, then give it a twirl?
Please let me know how it goes on this thread and we can finally ship this version with a few updates and some new drawing sets.
Long story short… We found a bug in SketchUp 2023, primarily on mac, where the Ruby LayOut API in SketchUp crashes on render. We resurrected the old LayOut API that we used before they baked it into ruby and automatically apply this to SketchUp 2018 and lower (which technically we don’t support)… and SketchUp 2023 mac. This beta version checks your SketchUp year and operating system, then applies the appropriate rendering solution for LayOut. On windows, you will see a black box appear for a moment, that’s normal… just let it run.
If you are on windows, and experiencing this crash in SketchUp 2023, or any crash on ConDoc export on mac or windows, you can force the legacy exporter from the Extensions dropdown > ConDoc > Help > Advanced > Use Legacy Export.
May 3, 2023 at 4:54 pm #34143[email protected]ParticipantFirst test – SU didn’t crash but the drawings weren’t created in Layout scrapbooks. I’ll try with the legacy exporter and see how that does
May 3, 2023 at 5:05 pm #34144Mike BrightmanKeymastercan you confirm that the drawings aren’t just not showing up in the viewport? even if the scrapbook looks blank, you can still drag and drop, then stretch the viewport to find your drawing… You should not need to force the legacy exporter if you are on mac, but give it a try!
May 3, 2023 at 5:15 pm #34145[email protected]ParticipantThe exporter did not create the ConDoc Drawings.layout file in the /Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2023/LayOut/Scrapbooks folder. Same result trying the legacy exporter
May 3, 2023 at 11:15 pm #34146[email protected]ParticipantI found the same thing. It doesn’t crash anymore, but it also doesn’t show that it is going to Layout. With mine the export window remains open and nothing really happens.
May 3, 2023 at 11:43 pm #34147[email protected]ParticipantI do see that I get an error in the Ruby Console.
May 3, 2023 at 11:48 pm #34148Mike BrightmanKeymasterCan you guys give this a try?
open the terminal and type this:
chmod a+x “/users/kevingalyen/library/application support/sketchup 2023/sketchup/plugins/condoc tools/bin/osx/ScrapbookGen”Then give it another shot? We can bake this into the next version…
May 3, 2023 at 11:52 pm #34149Mike BrightmanKeymastermake sure to adjust the text in bold…
chmod a+x “/users/kevingalyen/library/application support/sketchup 2023/sketchup/plugins/condoc tools/bin/osx/ScrapbookGen”
May 4, 2023 at 3:00 am #34150[email protected]ParticipantIt says “No such file or directory”
May 4, 2023 at 3:16 am #34151[email protected]ParticipantOtherwise it did not do anything. I did notice that the last drawing I sent over that worked from SU22 is still in the condoc drawing scrapbook.
May 4, 2023 at 7:11 pm #34154Mike BrightmanKeymasterI think this one will do the trick… Please give this beta a try!
May 4, 2023 at 11:37 pm #34155[email protected]Participant<p style=”text-align: left;”>That did the trick!!</p>
May 16, 2023 at 3:15 pm #34182James RogersParticipantHi Mike, I’m experiencing the crashing when sending the SU 2023 model scenes to Layout using CONDOC 5 as well. Should I try downloading your most recent (5/4/23) posting? I’m running Mac Ventura 13.3.1 (a). Thanks. JR
May 16, 2023 at 4:02 pm #34183Mike BrightmanKeymasterJR! Yes sir… That’s the version that finally fixed it… https://workdrive.zohoexternal.com/external/b279d4336e254c42be5e6e91e78585892a6b8123a6beadf084acf3cb4ff42589/download?directDownload=true
Please let me know if that works for you too. We are planning on launching this one very soon. Thanks!
Mike
